Organic modernism and biomorphism was a major influence at the Swedish glass factory Flygsfors, most notably in the designs of master glassblower Paul Kedelv (1917 - 1983), who in his "Coquille" series, created a popular range of sculptural forms that were both eye catching and extreme in their use of bright colours such as blue, red, pink, green and yellow, predominantly cased in white to heighten the contrast, and in their extravagant biomorphic forms. The "Coquille" series was originally based on the organic shapes of seashells. Flygsfors was founded in Sweden in 1888 and was purchased by Orrefors in 1970. The company officially became part of Orrefors when they closed Flygsfors in 1980. The work of Paul Kedelv and Flysfors has been "rediscovered" in the recent resurgence of Mid-Century decorative arts and furniture. As each piece was handblown, they are increasingly rare one-of-a-kind pieces and highly collectible. Dealers and collectors are witnessing a swift increase in value and demand for these unusual works of art.
