Alexander Calder, Composition V (DLM No. 141), 1968, Lithograph. While Calder’s famous mobiles were seen as the “perfect marriage of abstraction and movement,” the duality of structure and form can be observed in the equally famous stabiles illustrated in these lithographic works. Though primarily considered a sculptor, Calder was a talented draftsman as well, with much of his information first conceived in two dimensions. Humor and curiosity informed the radical direction in which Calder and his contemporaries reduced the figurative tradition to abstract forms in the language of cutouts, simple lines, and shapes. On this double-sheet lithograph, the aggregate of these forms and their exploratory spirit are exhibited through Calder’s structures, both hanging or standing - and on paper. text by Picasa.
